Healthy Eyes Reminders that You Should Do Everyday

  • Fruits and vegetables play a great part in keeping your eyes healthy.- Eat lots of these to maintain those healthy eyes. Eating carrots that contains beta carotene will reduce the risk of macular degeneration.- Also, broccoli and bell peppers are good for your eyes too because they contain lots of Vitamin C; foods that contain omega 3 like salmon and sardines will help protect those tiny blood vessels in our eyes. Sweet potatoes and spinach are other healthy options too because they contain Vitamin C, lutein and beta carotene. Always have a well- balanced diet. This will help you maintain a good eyesight and healthy weight as well. This health regimen will help you prevent diabetes, as this is one of the leading causes of blindness among adults.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses for more than 19 hours, as this can cause discomfort to your eyes and permanent eye damage.- Wearing glasses for longer periods of time should also be avoided specially those 3-D glasses. Remove your contact lenses when you are going to sleep. Doing this, will cause your eyes to have a regular supply of oxygen. On the other hand, contacts block oxygen’s flow into your eyes. When swimming, do not wear contact lenses.
  • Use cucumber for 10 minutes before going to bed at night to prevent puffiness.- Cucumber contains ascorbic and caffeic acids which will help prevent water retention. Green tea bag may also be used to prevent puffiness. Just soak the green tea bag in cold water for a few minutes and place it over your eyes for about 15 minutes.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection– Long exposures to UV rays can harm your eyesight. Consequently, long exposures to UV rays are said to be the cause of cataracts, macular degeneration, and other related eye conditions.
  • Do not spend long hours on staring at your computer’s screen because it may cause strain and dry eyes.- Too much time looking at the computer’s screen can also cause muscle fatigue in the eyes. People tend to blink less when they are looking at the screen causing them to dry. So, make an extra effort to blink every 30 seconds when working in front of the computer to prevent dry eyes.
  • If necessary, wear goggles.- Be sure to wear them and other protective eyewear when working with chemicals, to minimize the transmission of harmful particles into your eye.
  • Exercising your eyes will help you maintain those healthy eyes too.- Try to focus them on objects that are near and far from you. Repeat this process for several times.
  • Avoid reading in a dim light as this will cause strain in the eyes but it will not damage them.- If your eyes feel tired, stop and take a break from reading.
  • Avoid looking directly at a bright light.- Do not focus your eyes on the sun directly as it can cause damage to your vision.
  • If you are using an eye drop because of an allergy, use an allergen reducing eye drop specially during those days when allergies are prevalent.- Stop using this eye drop if itchiness is already gone. Prolonged use of this eye product may cause strain in the cornea. Avoid prolonged use of redness relieving eye drops, as this will cause more redness to your eyes. Make it a habit to read eye drop labels carefully. Be aware of the fact, that many eye drop solutions should not be used while you are wearing contact lenses.
  • Quit smoking as smoking cause cataracts, optic nerve damage and macular degeneration .
