Fancy a free doughnut? Well you’d better brush off those sea salts off your eyepatch and channel your inner Black Beard as Krispy Kreme is once again celebrating its National Talk Like A Pirate Day 2016!

Today, Krispy Kreme will treat their loyal customers with a free Original Glazed doughnut provided that they talk like a pirate when they visit any participating Krispy Kreme store. But if one of these delectable desserts isn’t enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, there’s another surprise waiting for you: come with at least three related items and you’ll get a dozen
absolutely free! Now is probably the right time to get a parrot, a peg leg and a bandana if you want to have a free box.

But if going Jack Sparrow isn’t your thing, Krispy Kreme has also partnered with instant messaging and multimedia mobile app Snapchat this year to give those shy landlubbers a chance to get the freebie. All they have to do is use the Snapchat Krispy Kreme filter, grin at least, show it to any Krispy Kreme employee and enjoy your free bounty.

The International Talk Like A Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday created by John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995. Baur, who goes by the name of Ol’ Chumbucket and Summers, aka Cap’n Slappy proclaimed September 19 th of each year as the day when everyone in the world talks like a pirate. Krispy Kreme on the other hand, has been observing the holiday since 2012. This year marks their first ever collaboration with Snapchat.

To complete the celebration, Krispy Kreme will also be offering a couple of pirate themed doughnuts: the aptly named (and filled) Pirate Doughnut will come with a pirate face on top, while the Skull and Crossbones variant is topped with chocolate and vanilla icing and a skull candy.

Talk Like A Pirate Day is just one of the many fake marketing holidays where customers can get their hands on their free favorites. Among others, there’s 7-Eleven Day (July 11); National Rootbeer Float Day (August 6); National Coffee Day (September 29) and Free Shipping Day (December 18).

Kidding aside, holidays like these provide a subtle venue for companies to thank their patrons for their continued support. They’re fun, they’re innovative and they can be enjoyed by the whole family, and it’s a little event that they can look forward to every year. Who knows what Krispy Kreme or other companies might think to include next year.
