Silliman University was formally established in Dumaguete City in 1901. In those years, it was formerly named as Silliman Institute. Moreover, its unique name was given by Dr. Horace Brinsmade Silliman.

The generous and workaholic founder of this prestigious academic institution was a retired businessman who loves to help people in his own special way. To make his fondest dream a reality, he started with an initial capital outlay of only $10.000. From there, it had dynamically began nurturing the minds of Filipinos by having an elementary school that was exclusively meant for young boys. Then, after almost nine years of successful operation the University of Silliman in Dumaguete had its momentous expansion by building another campus that was especially meant this time, for college students in 1910. Therefore, this famous historical landmark in Dumaguete was officially accredited as a university in that same year. During the advent of the 20th century, its first half had actually written an interesting and unforgettable chronicle in the colourful life and times of Silliman University. To date, it was basically under the democratic tutelage of the Americans. It is named as A.Y. Zoological and Botanical Gardens. This particular orchard of theirs, is the official site of the Center for Tropical Conservation Studies. Construction wise, the said garden was just a pet project in the beginning for the school’s tree planting agenda. Likewise, it was initially employed as a field laboratory by the Silliman University’s Department of Biology. During the ‘90s decade, it became the first-ever captive breeding ground of the Philippine Spotted Deer. As this fabulous botanical garden flourished with so much scientific and ecological benefits, it has been added with other wildlife species. In so doing, this orchard has tremendously increased its plant and animal species in 1996. Do want to know the most interesting feature of this university? Surprisingly, it has a beach which is found in front of the school’s marine laboratory.

Location

Geographically, Silliman University is strategically located in Dumaguete City which has its main campus along the busy Avenue of Hibbard. As for its easiest landmark, there are old acacia trees and is very much in proximity to the province’s well-developed downtown district. From a larger landscape, this school beamingly faces the east because it is occupying about one-third of Dumaguete’s productive downtown. Now to make it more pleasant and worth seeing, it is coupled with exuberating and symbolic portals which are said to be the finest emblems of this educational institution. These are the Gates of Opportunity, Knowledge and Service.
