Sungha Jung in Manila, will be one of the most dazzling music spectacle this year. Who is Sungha Jung? He is a South Korean acoustic finger-styled guitarist. He has his YouTube channel that has 2.6 million subscribers. He creates acoustic covers and arrangements, typically by ear or by watching videos, it has original music wherein he play online. He was nicknamed as a Guitar Prodigy and the August Rush in Korea but he prefers to be known as a guitarist rather than guitar prodigy.

Sungha Jung fell in love with the guitar, when his father taught him the basics of the said instrument. Upon learning about it, he developed his skill greatly by just trying to play what he had melodiously heard about. When he encountered some difficulty, he would study online videos. Sungha came to play fingerstyles when his father discovered these techniques via the internet. At first, Sungha’s mother and grandmother disapproved of the noise that Sungha and his father had continuously created, but they came to understood it as his gift.

After his first debut video on the internet, he got many supporters from whom he asked for advices on his guitar-plying skills. His cover The Pirates of the Caribbean, theme song, has over 42 million views. Thus, making Sungha an internet sensation and his exceptional guitar-playing caught the attention of world-renowned guitarists who found his covers of their beautiful songs impressive.

Moreover, he has played on stage with them multiple times. Similarly, he received guitar lessons from Hat Shuji, a well-known Japanese jazz guitarist and has also been mentored by German guitarist Ulli Bogerhausen, whom Sungha refers to as his musical inspiration; from whom he learned much about composing and arranging. In one of his videos, he highly recommended that interested guitar enthusiasts must make use of the ear method. Besides acoustic and classical guitar, his YouTube channel also has videos of him playing the twelve-starred guitar, electric guitar, the four and the six-stringed ukulele, harp ukulele, and piano. Language wise, Sungha also speaks English besides Korean.

Sungha received his first guitar at the age of 9. It was a very coarse plywood guitar that was less than $60. Upon discovering Sungha’s skill with the toy-like guitar, his father decided to buy him a better one, a Cort Earth 900. He started playing seriously with this guitar. His third one was a custom-made Selma guitar. Today, he currently plays a Lakewood guitar which has his autograph on its fingerboard. When there is school, he only practices for about 1 to 2 hours. But, during school breaks he usually consumes about not more than three hours. Sungha usually takes an hour to figure out about the notes and fingering to a piece, and typically takes another five hours to practice before recording. He spends 2 days up to a month practicing songs to become more accurate.

Sungha Jung’s Colorful Career

Sungha Jung was featured on Narsha’s solo album for the song, I’m in Love in 2010. In 2011, he performed in the US with Trace Bundy and also toured around Scandinavia and Japan. In 2012, Jung has collaborated with 2NE1, creating acoustic versions of the group’s hit songs Lonely and I Love You. Later in 2012, he participated in a live stage with BIGBANG’s G-Dragon, where they performed That XX. He performed I’m Yours with Jason Mraz who described Sungha as amazing and as his hero. in 2013. Sungha played Ahn Hyeok. Come he did play for the 2011 Korean movie, The Suicide Forecast.

Ever since his unexpected discovery, Sungha Jung’s first album was released on June 17, 2010. His second album, Irony came out in the market on September 21, 2011, Meanwhile, his third album entitled was released on April 15, 2013. These three albums were recorded at the Ulli Bogershausen’s Studio in Germany. Each of these featured an increasingly more original musical approach. Lastly, his latest album Monologue is almost exclusively composed of his own compositions and was released on April 28, 2014. This album was recorded at Brickwall Sound in Seoul, and was produced by Sungha him-self.
